The Holiday Hosting Yard Checklist for Dog Owners

The Holiday Hosting Yard Checklist for Dog Owners

Hosting for the holidays in Iowa means two guarantees: someone will arrive early, and at least one guest will end up in your backyard. Maybe they brought their own dog. Maybe the kids want to play outside. Maybe Uncle Dave just likes to stand in the cold with a drink and inspect your fence line. Whatever the reason, the yard is part of the tour, and December is a terrible month to be caught with a landmine field.

Here is the dog owner's hosting checklist.

One week out

  • Book the yard cleanup. Whether that is you with a scooper on a not-frozen afternoon or a one-time cleanup from us, get the yard fully cleared while the weather cooperates. December piles freeze to the ground and get very stubborn, so earlier beats later.
  • Clear and treat the walkways. Guests and grandparents need ice-free paths, and your dog needs pet-safe ice melt on those paths. Rock salt and licked paws are a bad combo, especially with a houseful of distraction coming.
  • Check the fence and gate. Holiday chaos means doors opening constantly. Make sure the backyard is escape-proof so the dog has a safe overflow room when the doorbell will not stop.

Day before

  • Quick pass on the potty zone. Even a clean yard collects a few days of fresh deposits. A five-minute sweep of the dog's main corner keeps sledding kids and curious guest-dogs out of trouble.
  • Stage the dog station. Fresh water bowl away from the buffet, a mat or crate in a quiet room, and a favorite chew. An overwhelmed dog with an exit plan is a well-behaved dog. If a crate is part of your dog's happy place, our crate training guide has setup tips.

During the visit

  • Brief the guests. Two sentences: which foods are off-limits (looking at you, cousin with the ham), and whether the dog is allowed out front.
  • Watch the table scraps. Rich holiday food is the classic December route to a very unhappy dog stomach. If things do go sideways, your dog's poop will tell you before anything else does.

FAQ

Can I get a one-time cleanup before a holiday gathering?

Absolutely, they are one of our most popular December bookings. Request a quote and mention your hosting date, and we will get you on the schedule ahead of it.

What if snow is already covering the yard?

We clear everything visible and catch the rest as it surfaces. If a warm spell is in the forecast before your event, that is a great cleanup window.

Do you service yards during the holiday weeks?

Yes, routes run through the holidays with occasional schedule shifts around the holiday itself. You will get a text either way.
